Artist Talk With Carmen Winant

“Join Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland for a conversation with Carmen Winant. This event is in conjunction with the exhibition Orlando, curated by Tilda Swinton, which is organized by Aperture, New York.

The artist Carmen Winant will provide insights into her work. As a writer and artist, Winant explores the possibilities of feminist uprise against patriarchal structures. Her works in the exhibition Orlando – Based on a Novel by Virginia Woolf, layer images of her naked chest with photographs originally published in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. Inspired by Woolf’s novel, Winant’s works deal with themes of limitlessness, transience, and self-discovery. In conversation with Nadine Wietlisbach, director Fotomuseum Winterthur, Winant will speak about her work and her working process.”

“While working as a freelance photographer in 1977, Bill Bernstein was sent to Studio 54 to shoot a black-tie dinner for President Carter’s mother, Lillian. The buzz about what usually happened inside the club compelled Bernstein to stick around after his assignment; the rest is disco history.

“After earning her degree in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1991, Vera Lutter moved to New York City to enroll in the Photography and Related Media program at SVA, receiving her MFA in 1995. While she has gained international recognition for her uniquely produced camera obscura images of industrial and architectural sites around the world.”
